Slavery was a very controversial topic, splitting up the country in two. Most of the southern states were proslavery while most of the northern states were antislavery.

In class today two groups made presentations and presented a couple major events for anti and pro slavery.

Some of the main pro slavey events are the Slave Act of 1850, L'Compton Constitution, The war in 1861, and Bleeding Kansas. Some of the antislavery events were The Missouri Compromise, Lincoln and his Emancipation Proclamation, and the Underground Railroad,

The slave act of 1850 is the law that if a slave runs away from his/ her duties and escapes slavery if someone finds them then the founder is responsible for returning the slave to their native owner. For this act it was very hard to enforce in the northern, anti slavery states. The lecompton constitution, the most controversial 4 constitutions, This excluded free blacks to live in Kansas. The war of 1861 was because the south wanted to be a different country than the north because of their different views on slavery. Bleeding Kansas was during a 5 year span to establish territory. However, the Proslavery people tried to get rid of the abolitionists and this ending in a very bloody war with many deaths and injuries. John brown was an abolitionist and led many revolts in Kansas during this

five year span.

The Missouri Compromise is when Missouri wanted to become a slave state but it would upset the balance of free and slave states, so as a compromise they made Maine become free and they made a line across the Louisianna territory. The Emancipation Proclamation is when lincoln wanted the slaves to be free however, he couldn't say that they were fighting the civil war to abolish slavery or else the southern soldiers would not fight the war with the north, SO the African American men where allowed to join the military. This started the 13th amendment. Than the underground railroad was lead by Herriett Tubma. this secretive path helped a hundred of thousands of slaves. The slaves started to flee to the northern states but then when the the fugitive act than the slaves started to flee to canada or mexico on this track. This ended with the emancipation proclamation. Then Lincon's campaign was on the behalf of the abolitionist republicans strong belief that the current law went against all men are created equal did not believe in slavery but believed that it went against their rights.
